Tervel is a town in North East Bulgaria. It is part of Dobrich Region and is lies near the town of Dulovo. The town is the administrative center of Tervel municipality and is located 42 km away from the regional center of Dobrich, 91 km away from the sea port of Varna and 58 km away from the Danube port of Silistra.
Tervel Municipality occupies the western part of Dobrich Region and its total area is 579.7 sq. m. The altitude varies from 50 to 300 m. The terrain is deeply cut by dry gullies. The biggest asset of the municipality is the fertile soil and the great climate. To both north and north-west the municipality borders the region of Silistra, to the south it borders the Region of Varna and to the south-west it borders Shumen Region. The climate is temperate-continental. The population of Tervel numbers to 7 000 people.
According to archaeological researches seven Thracian settlements used to exist on the territory of the nowadays Tervel municipality. There are many remains revealed to support this fact.
It is interesting to know that the fortress in the village of Kladentzi is set right in the middle between Drastar Fortress (in the town of Silistra) and the first Bulrgarian capital - Pliska. Therefore this fortress had been of great importance.
First written official sources in which Tervel was mentioned as a settlement were Turkish documents from 1673. Back then the settlement was known as Kurtbunar. On June 1942 it was renamed to Tervel.
The real hereditaments along with the traditions and the spirit of the generations who used to inhabit these land for thousands of years are preserved in a rich archaeological exposition and a colourful ethnographic gathering on display in the Historical Museum of Tervel.
There are one secondary school, one vocational high-school and three kindergartens on the territory of the town. On the territory of the municipality there are schools in the following villages: Jeglartzi, Orlyak, Zarnevo, Nova Kamena, Pop Gruevo, Kableshkovo, Bezmer, Gradnitza, Kolartzi and Bozhan. There are kindergartens in the villages of: Jeglartzi, Orlyak, Zarnevo, Bezmer, Bojan, Kolartzi, Balik, Sarnetz, Chestimensko, Nova Kamena, Kableshkovo and Gradnitza.
The healthcare in the municipality is supported by a well developed system of healthcare units. The multi-profile hospital for active treatment in Tervel provides quality medical services to the people from the entire municipality. In Tervel there is also a Medical Center and an Emergency Medical Center, many private doctor's offices and dental specialists. The main branch of economics to be developed in Tervel municipality is the agriculture. Being part of Dobrudja area it is one of the most significant manufacturer of agricultural production in the country. The favourable climate and relief provide excellent conditions for the production of grain, fodder and oil-yielding cultures /the production of which has become popular during the past decade/. The manufacturers of agricultural production are developing new productions such as growing of cultivated herbs. The production of fruits /apples, apricots and plums/ is also being developed. The preserved natural environment and the ecologically clean area are an important predisposition for the production of ecologically clean products. Bee-keeping has also become an important branch in the municipality's economy.
The industry has is represented by the two largest factories in the municipality, located in Tervel - Plastchim /production of thermo-reactive plastics/ and DEKA /production of clothing/.
The roads in the municipality are in a very good condition. No railway transportation is available on the territory of Tervel municipality. The nearest railway station is in the town of Dulovo - 32 km away from Tervel. Regular bus lines connect the municipal center to the regional towns of Dobrich, Ruse, Shumen, Silistra and the city of Varna.
Spending some time among beautiful nature is the best way to relax. The golden wheat fields, the vast plains covered with sun-flowers, the heavy maize stems and the great variety of wild and cultivated herbs create a scenery typical for the municipality and provide excellent conditions for the development of both eco and rural tourism.
The territory of the State Game-Breeding Station represents a plateau deeply cut by dry gullies. The favourable climate defines the wide variety of game: Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Mouflon, Hare, Pheasant and Grey Partridge. Many protected animal, bird and plant species may be seen at the Station: White Stork, Tengmalm's Owl, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Scops-Owl, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Least Weasel, Common Cuckoo, Eurasian Bullfinch, Narcissus Flowered Anemone and Wild Anemone. The Game-Breeding Station near Tervel receives organized groups of hunters from Germany, Italy and England.
