Agushevi Konatsi

Bulgarian sights
Location:  Smolyan Region

Agushevi Konatsi are located in the village of Mogilitsa, which is 26 km southwest from the city of Smolyan and 123 km south from the city of Plovdiv.

Agushevi Konatsi was built in the mid-nineteenth century by Bulgarian master builders for Agush aga and his three sons. This is how it was named. This was deduced from the inscription at the entrance of one of the courtyards, which reads 1843. Construction continues on Agushevi Konatsi for 20 years.

Konak has 221 windows, 86 doors and 24 chimneys. Situated among the Rhodope scenery overlooking the green meadows and forests above the river Arda. Konak is so large that today of it is spoken in the plural - Agushevi Konatsi.

Agushevi Konatsi are an enclosed area consisting of three consecutive yard, isolated from one another by internal walls. The courtyards are surrounded by residential and farm buildings. Thus, each of the three yard is a separate residential unit. In the yard are included the well, house of lords, house of domestics, rooms for temporary workers on the farm, stables, barn, granary and other premises. Chimneys are high of hew stone, and most paired together with the vault.

Building for women is separated by high internal walls, incorporating rotating closets, so that during conversation or transfer of property, the woman remains invisible. Thus spared the obligation of women to constantly cover her face.

All rooms in which the lords have lived are broad and bright, with a fireplace in almost every room. The windows have wooden grids of finely guillotine. It is not yet clear why one of the rooms has doubled doors and walls. The room is specially made channel to eavesdrop on conversations in the parlor.

The entire building can be defined as similar to the earlier generic castles - with a defensive tower and put up resistance for long guns, with two rows of staggered holes. The tower is decorated with frescoes and interior architectural design is done by pine, walnut and cherry. There are beautifully painted interior walls and eaves.

Despite all the fortifications, white color and paintings on the tower gives Konatsi rather fresh and warm view of the palace. Courts create comfort with wide overhanging balconies and many windows. In the area Cheresheva there is a building that essentially repeats the architectural idea of Konak in Mogilitsa - this is the farm of the same Agush Aga.

Agushevi Konatsi are declared an architectural and artistic monument of national importance.
Konatsi are open for free visits.
