Roman tomb - town of Hisarya

Bulgarian sights
Location:  Plovdiv Region, Hisarya

The Hisarya tomb is a late Roman family tomb built in the second half of the IVth century, located in the surroundings of Hisarya town, Plovdiv region.

It lies approximately 300 m southwest of the town's fortress wall, in the natural park "Slaveev Dol" and near the mineral spring "Momina salza" /Lily of the Valley/.

In Hisarya are found five late ancient tombs, but this is the largest and the most interesting one. It is also known as Tomb № 3.

It consists of an arched hallway, a staircase and a burial chamber. The walls of the tomb and corridors are decorated with colorful paintings that symbolize the Garden of Eden and are partially preserved.

The burial chamber is a rectangular room with dimensions of 4.29 m and 2.78 m and a cylindrical vault. There are six symmetrical niches in the walls for ritual purpose. The floor of the chamber is covered with a beautiful mosaic. On both sides are built two burial beds.

The construction techniques and materials, the frescoes and the mosaics suggest that Hissar tomb was designed for the family of a Roman noble, a commander or a dignitary.

Transport

The tomb is easily accessible on foot and may be seen after a preliminary inquiry in the Archaeological Museum in Hisarya town.

Accommodation
