Beloslav

Beloslav is a town in north-eastern Bulgaria, part of Varna region, administrative center of Beloslav municipality. It is located 19 km to the west from the city of Varna. The relief is flat-hilly. The town is situated on both banks of Varna-Devnya channel, between several hills. The climate is temperate-continental, influenced by the proximity to the Black Sea. It is characterized by a cool summer, a rainy autumn, a mild winter with scanty snowfalls and a sunny spring. The territory of the municipality is spread between the two banks of Beloslav and Varna lakes and borders the territories of  the municipalities Varna, Avren, Devnya and Aksakovo. The altitude varies between 3 and 70 m.

history

The oldest known name of Beloslav was Krushevo. The settlement was also named Gebedje, Belovo, Belevo. Krushevo village was burned down and depopulated by the Turks in the beginning of the 19th century.
In the middle of the 19th century two brothers named Sava and Yanaki passed by the deserted village of Krushevo on their way home. Facinated by the lake, the dense forests and the fertile soil they have decided to settle there. They built their houses in the upper, southern of the valley and named the new settlement Gebedje. No one knows for certain the meaning of the name but one of the suggestions is that it means "a pregnant woman"  since the hills surrounding the village resembled a lying pregnant woman.
In 1945 a lady name d Dimitra Voykova established the first feminine society in Beloslav. Its members were very active - they made a maternity hospital which later on became a hospital where midwives were trained.

In the town there are three schools, a professional high-school, three kindergartens, a communitiy center witha  library, a medical center, an Orthodox church, various kinds of shops, a municipality, pharmacies.
The roads are in a very good condition. Well developed is the railway and bus transportation connecting the town to the city of Varna and the nearby villages. Both banks on which the town is situated are connected by a ferry.
All modern communications are available in Beloslav - high speed internet, satellite TV, covareage of all mobile operators.
Developed in the area are the power engineering and the extractive industry. In Beloslav there is a thermoelectric power station, and the development of the extractive industry is supported by the opportunities for extraction of building materials in the area of Beloslav and Razdelna village. Specific for the area is  the production of grain and technical cultures and vine-growing.

landmarks

  • Yatata /meaning "the flocks"/ area is an artificial lake overgrown with water vegetation, situated on the southern bank of the channel to connect the Varna and the Beloslav lakes, right next to the town of Beloslav. Part of the area are also the surrounding pastures, heights with low rock crowns and a small valley in its southern part. The area represents a mosaic of various kinds of habitats as most common are the swampy territories. Regardless its small area Yatata provides refuge for a great variety of birds throughout the year. It is a natural habitat for 208 bird species 62 of which are registered as endangered in Bulgaria, and 7 species are endangered world-wide. The area is one of the most important places in the country to protect two rare species nesting there - the Black-winged Stilt and the Little Bittern. The area is also important for the nesting of the Rudy Shelduck. A small population of Pied Avocet also nests in Yatata. During the migration period five endangered species are to be observed in the area - the Pygmy Cormorant, the Dalmatian Pelican, the Ferruginous Duck, the Glossy Ibis and the Eurasian spoonbill.
  • Some 2 km away from Beloslav is located another natural landmark named "Pobiti Kamani " or "The Petrified Forest". The total area of Pobiti Kamani area is 246.3 hectars. There are 14 groups of stone columns with an irregular, cylindrical or cone-shaped form situated among a sandy area in  the western part of the Varna lowland. It reaches the Beloslav lake to the south and the slopes of the Varna plateau to the north. The latest theory defines this unique formations as microbial-carbonate columns formed at the bottom of an ancient sea. The stone columns and pillars are reaching a height of up to 7 m and a diameter of 3 m. The space between the columns are covered with greyish-yellow sands and herbacious plants. The area is the only place in Bulgaria where a world-wide endangered plant specie Arenaria Rigida is to be found.
