Village of Nenkovo

Nenkovo is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is 56 km north-west of Kardzhali, 109 km north-east of Smolyan, 304 km south-west of Burgas, 151 km south-east of Plovdiv and 320 km in the same direction of Sofia.

It spreads out the Eastern Rhodopes, at 814 m above the sea level. The area is stony, with interesting rock shapes and low vegetation. Borovitsa River passes through here. It is the river that separates the Eastern from the Western Rhodopes.

The climate is mountainous but is attenuated by the warm air masses that come from the river currents. Summer is hot and winter is mild.

The population is approximately 130 people.

There is no car access inside the village most of the time of the year. The access to the village is through a rope bridge above Borovitsa River. The lack of cars has preserved the narrow village streets for centuries. They wind between the houses - most of which are with old architecture, constructed about 100-150 years ago.

The village is provided with water, electricity and telephone equipment. There is a town-hall and an elementary school. The school in Nenkovo is in the list of protected schools in the municipality. It is attended by pupils from the neighbouring villages. The nearest operational kindergarten is in village of Boino (43 km) and the nearest hospitals are in the municipal and regional town of Kardzhali.

Landmarks and tourism

The medieval bridge above Borovitsa River is located near village of Nenkovo. It outstands with impressive sizes and follow the architecture traditions of its time. The bridge is convenient for visits in combination with the other sites in this direction - 'The cave womb' near Borovitsa hut and the rock niches near villages of Nenkovo and Dazhdovnitsa.

The cult complex 'The cave womb' is situated in the region of Nenkovo. There is a marked tourist path through village of Enchets and Borovitsa hut. The temple-womb is an ancient Thracian sanctuary, set in difficult of access area. It is a cave that resembles a womb. At the far end of the cave is the sacred altar, where according to the Thracian beliefs the underground goddess mother conceives the sun god.

The rock niches near village of Nenkovo are hewn along a ring of massif sand rocks, close to Borovitsa River, after the far neighbourhoods of the village. They are visible by the asphalt road across the river. There are other hews such as grooves, sacrificial altars, etc.
