The town of Omurtag
Geography, climate and rivers
Geography: Omurtag is a town located in Eastern Bulgaria. Administrative center of Municipality of Omurtag, Targovishte District. It is the third largest in the area.
Situated on 525 meters altitude in Slannik area (Tozluk), the east part of Pre Balkans. It is located 24 km southeast of Targoviste, 77 km of Veliko Tarnovo and 141 km from Rousse.
Climate: moderate continental with hot summers and cold winters.
Rivers: The municipality is draining from two drainage pools: the Yantra river and the Kamchia river.
Population
To 2007 estimated number is 9000 people.
Economy
The industrial sector plays an important role in determining the economic outlook of Omurtag Municipality. Leading are separate branches of manufacturing industry - food, beverages and tobacco, textile and clothing, production of wood and joinery, manufacture of rubber and plastics, etc. Extractive industry is on a small scale represented by timber industry.
The agricultural sector is less involved in economic development.
The services sector is relatively underdeveloped.
Infrastructure
The territory of the town of Omurtag has good transport, communications, water supply and energy infrastructure. Roads are in good condition and provide a quick link to other localities.

Education and Culture
The town has four schools: Academician Daki Yordanov School, Simeon Velchev High School, Vocational School of Transport and Light Industry (PGTLP) and First Primary School Hristo Smirnenski. Also working three kindergartens. There also are two community centers - SHAFAK and Otets Paisiy.
The town has a historical museum. Opened on January 26, 1973 as a museum collection in 1994 was transformed into a historical museum. It has the number 384 museum objects. Its funds and exposures are located in three buildings grouped in an architectural complex. Among the exhibits particularly important space suit of the second Bulgarian cosmonaut Alexander Alexandrov born in Omurtag.
Cultural heritage includes: Thracian necropolis and Roman castle near the village of Kambourovo, the Roman villa near the village Mogilets, late Roman fortress near the village Vrani kon, St. Demetrius church and Sindirli Mosque and Mezlishka cheshma.
