Krushuna waterfalls (Maarata) are the largest water travertine cascade and it is with lots of skirts and pools and also rich in flora and fauna species.
There are situated in the north end of the Devetashkoto plato in the area of Krushuna village, Lovech region, 34 km east of the town of Lovech, 194 km northeast of the capital Sofia and 299 km west of the town of Varna.
The cascade flows from the Krushuna cave and is famous with its lakes and cave formations and is system of water basins and small lakes that are parted by skirts and parting water flows. The waterfall is known to be the highest limestone water cascade in the country.
The main cascade falls from height about 20 m and is parted. The water sprinkles and will give some fresh feelings especially if you decide to visit them in the summer thus they will make feel as part of the nature. Thick moss covers the rocks that are formed from the power of the water.The area is green, wet and cool - the ideal place for little excursion in the summer and the perfect way to get away from the summer heat.
The waterfalls are with status of protected natural landmark since 1995 in order to be preserved the unique formations in the area. Before there was constructed eco trail this natural landmark was not accessible and it was not possible the spring to be reached as it is hidden in the cave.
The trail consists of system of bridges and steps which allow the whole area to be seen. The march takes about hour and half as the tourists are given the opportunity to hire a local mountain guide who will help them and show them the most interesting parts.
During the walk you will notice a sign that says "Krushuna rock monastery of the monks hermits (ishiasti) XIII-XIV c. The ishiasts were hermits that inhabited isolated areas and spend their time in quietness and prayer.
In the area Maarata also is found Boninska cave with the largest underground lake in Bulgaria.
In the area could also be visited Devetashka cave. It is located on the right shore of Osam river and is exceptional for its large size. Its entrance is 35 m wide and 30 m high it leads to spacious hall with area 2400 sq. m. It is the cave with the largest entrance in Europe.
Just 4 km from the village of Krushuna is situated the abyss Vrannitsa. In order to get there you should go on road to the village of Karpachevo. You can get to the bottom of it through a system of steps.
A couple of houses of for guests are open in the village of Krushuna. There also are working pubs and restaurants, where you can taste local appetizers and desserts from buffalo yoghurt with honey and walnuts.
