altVarna has passed a new bill which will protect the environment around the urban area as the city undergoes continuous expansion. The strategic plan envisages the conservation of nature "for decades ahead", and was formulated by a municipal team headed by professor Ivan Nikiforov, the Cabinet's press service said on June 29. Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev attended the presentation and and has been, reportedly, involved "in the formulation of the plan".
"I am happy that the conservation of green belts around Varna has been guaranteed by the new municipal and urban plan," Stanishev said. "With Varna's constant expansion, a thoroughly new vision is required. The Government will continue to offer assistance to protect the environment as well as provide funds for the construction of vital new infrastructure in the city and around the port area," Stanishev has said.
The state has already provided nine million leva for the overhaul and expansion of Devnya Boulevard, around which the new port is earmarked for construction. "This way, we aim to develop not only the region but boost the national economy as a whole," Stanishev was quoted as saying. He went on to underline that in the past several years the Government has invested heavily in Varna, noting the 18 million leva which were poured into the refurbishment and reinforcement of the town's harbour and waterfront.
