City-planning

The Bulgarian city of Burgas is poised to modernise its outdated urban transport, according to reports in Bulgarian media on November 29 2010.
Burgas municipality has launched a project called "Integrated urban transport" which will run for three years under the operational programme 'Regional Development', private Bulgarian television channel bTV reported. Funds will be used to buy new buses and new bus terminals, as well as the development of new bus lines across the city, the reports said.
Additionally, the project envisages the construction of buffer parking lots on the outskirts of Burgas, as well as the erection of modern pedestrian overpasses on major junctions that are prone to accidents and considered "high risk".
The contract, which will finance the project, was signed over the weekend, on November 25 by city mayor Dimitar Nikolov and the Deputy Minister of Regional and Urban Development Liliana Pavlova. The financial assistance under the 'Regional Development' programme will amount to 67 million euro, the report said.
Among the seven largest cities in the country, to date, Burgas is the first city in Bulgaria to be awarded funds under such a project.
