Bulgaria has been ranked 55th in UN's Human Development Index, the organization's new report shows.

Thus, the Balkan country classifies among the countries perceived to have a high human development, the second highest developed group according to the index.

Bulgaria is placed one place below Montenegro and one ahead of Saudi Arabia. However, in the inequality-adjusted index, Bulgaria is placed 52nd.

Norway tops the list of the countries with very high human development, followed by Australia and the Netherlands. The index is further divided in medium-and low development countries.

The last three spots are occupied by Burundi, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The 2011 Human Development Report focuses on the challenge of sustainable and equitable progress

"Human development, which is about expanding people's choices, builds on shared natural resources. Promoting human development requires addressing sustainability -locally, nationally and globally –and this can and should be done in ways that are equitable and empowering," the report says.
