Turkey may launch high-speed rail line to Bulgaria in five years

City-planning

Turkey may launch a high-speed railway link between the country's western city of Edirne and Bulgaria's capital Sofia within five years, Turkish Railways' chief Suleyman Karaman said, as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) on May 8 2011.

The project has already been discussed by the transport ministries of the two countries, he said.

"The new high-speed railway will facilitate transportation from Turkey to Europe and back," according to Karaman.

By the end of 2011, Turkey will put into operation a high-speed railway line between Edirne and Istanbul. About two thirds of the 280 km section have already been completed.

Earlier, China invited Bulgaria to join a project envisaging the construction of a high-speed railway track between Beijing and Istanbul, which could be extended to Bulgaria.
