Transport 2050: Europe's ambitious plan to phase out petrol-fuelled vehicles completely by 2050

A trans - European electromobility initiative, or Green eMotion, worth 41.8 million euro will be endorsed by the European Commission, the EC website said on March 30 2011.
The initiative will be in partnership with 42 partners from industry, utilities, electric car manufacturers, municipalities, universities and technology and research institutions, the report said.
The aim of the initiative is to promote, facilitate and and spread the sale of electric vehicles in Europe, as well as offering the necessary know-how. The EC is set to allocate about 24.2 million euro to finance part of the initiative's activities.
In Bulgaria, the first batch of electric vehicles were registered at the traffic police department (KAT) on March 30 2011, undergoing the same "routine" quality control checks, as are their standard, petrol-fuelled relatives.
Sofians might be be greeted to the sight of them in just a matter of days, as the first electric vehicles will be supplied to their owners at the beginning of next week, the report said. For the moment, however, because of a lack of infrastructure, the owners will be supplied with the equipment allowing them to charge their cars at home.
The installation of charging stations around Sofia and other major cities and towns will start soon, however, the report said.
"Transport is current 96 per cent dependent on oil for its energy needs. This is totally unsustainable. The Transport 2050 Roadmap aims to break transport's current oil dependency and allow mobility to grow," Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, said for the EC website.
"We can and we must do both. It can be win-win. But there are major challenges. Transport 2050 calls for a reduction of CO² from transport of at least 60 per cent by 2050. At the heart of this strategy is a major shift in cities to the electric vehicles away from cars with conventionally fuelled engines," he added.
"The level of EU financial support for this e-motion project shows just how serious we are at EU level about achieving these goals. This is a very promising initiative for the future," he said.
The ambitious vision of Transport 2050 is to have petrol-fuelled cars in cities halved by 2030, and phased out completely by 2050, the statement said.
