Three quarters of Bulgarians try to follow the principles of ecological lifestyle

Ecology

Almost half of the Bulgarian households try to save the water they use for domestic purposes, shows data from the latest nationally representative survey of BBSS Gallup International on ecological lifestyle, conducted exclusively for Klassa daily.

In general, the survey reveals a positive trend - an increase in the number of Bulgarian people who make conscientious effort to protect the environment. The share of Bulgarians, claiming to take care of the environment, is significantly higher than the respective figure for 2009. A total of 73% of the adult population in our country does at least one thing in order to protect the environment, which is an 8% increase compared to the figure recorded two years ago.

The saving of water by households remains the most popular practice aimed at reducing the negative impact of people on the environment. The popularity of this measure has increased by 8%, compared to the figure for 2009. The saving of drinking water is the most common practice among people of over 55 years of age, graduates and people with a social status above the average.

The share of the supporters of energy saving bulbs has increased most significantly, compared to the same period two years ago. In 2009, merely 23% of Bulgarian citizens said they had bought and installed such bulbs. Today, their share is almost twice as high - 41%. The residents of the capital (55% of them use the new model of bulbs), the graduates (62%) and the people with high social status (67%) are the most active groups in terms of this practice.

The popularity of the other measures ordinary people can take in order to reduce the environmental damage, such as separate waste collection, cycling or using the public transport, using canvas reusable bags instead of plastic ones, remains unchanged compared to the respective figures recorded in 2009. Almost a third (30%) of the respondents collects the household waste separately, and about one-fifth uses the public transportation instead of their private cars.
