The new Dragichevo interchange opens on December 17
The new interchange, linking the Lyulin and Strouma motorways, will be officially launched on December 17, the private Bulgarian television channel reported.
It will be opened for general traffic from 11am, the report said.
The new facility will accommodate traffic from Sofia towards southwestern Bulgaria, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad and the Koulata-Promahon border crossing point with Greece.
"Once the traffic is diverted through the interchange, we are expecting congestion to be alleviated significantly," the director of the district road office in the town of Pernik, Roumen Sachanski, told the bTV.
More than 32 000 vehicles are expected to pass through the interchange daily in peak season, the report said.
The Lyulin A5 motorway has a total length of 19km, a project costing a total of 7.5 million leva a km, while a total of 116 million euro has been allocated for its construction, 37 million euro of which are provided by Bulgarian taxpayers.
The Strouma motorway meanwhile will have a total length of 156km when completed and will lead to the Greek-Bulgarian border at Koulata, as part of the E79 route.
