The Attractions of Sicily

Around the world

Sicily is becoming increasingly popular with overseas investors who are immediately charmed by the beauty of the area. The south-eastern part of the island is proving to be particularly attractive, as everyone who comes here is enchanted not only by the climate and beaches, but also its history and culture and the more relaxed style of living.

The provinces of Ragusa and Siracusa in Sicily have the highest concentration of UNESCO world Heritage sites. They have also attracted large numbers of celebrities and the wealthy and there is an increasing demand for residential buildings which are ripe for renovation.

Many homes in the countryside have already been carefully restored according to the local building tradition providing holiday homes, cottages and boutique bed-and-breakfast opportunities.

Properties in the countryside offer the ideal retreat from the cities, but homes in the city have their own attractions as many are in the late baroque architecture style and are ideal for buyers who wish to get involved with the local social life. Beach lovers may prefer the homes in the fishing villages of Marzamemi, Donnalucata and Sampieri which have beautiful sandy beaches and gorgeous views.

Property prices here cost an average between €800 per square metre to €1200 per square metre. A typical farmhouse in the countryside just a short distance from the city which has a potential living area of 300 m? and which comes with 6000 square metres of land would be expected to sell for around €380,000 and would require some restoration.

While some properties are already restored its always best to hire a local consultant to represent you throughout the buying process and who is able to spot any potential problems with the buildings and land.
