Spanish cinema festival in Sofia

Culture

Thanks to the great interest and enthusiasm of Bulgarian audiences over previous years, Spanish and Ibero-American cinema week in Sofia has now become a tradition.

The festival, between May 11 and May 15, takes place at the National Palace of Culture and is supported by the embassies of Spain, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador and Argentina.

The programme includes16 features and five short films. The selection encompasses various genres, from police actions to documentaries and animation.

The festival opens May 11 at 7pm with the Bulgarian premiere of the award-winning 2010 film Even the Rain (original title Tambien la lluvia) by Iciar Bollain. Some of the best productions of Ibero-American cinema will be screened, for example The Artist (Argentina), The Present (Chile), Three times per two (Cuba), Until the Day is Coming (Ecuador) and Venezuelan comedy The Chaste Grandmother.

Also, if you missed Javier Bardem's excellent performance in Biutiful, you will have that chance at the festival. In addition, children's animation feature The Magical Adventure in the Country of Night is provided by the Spanish embassy.

Goya and Lie (Miente) are some of the short films featuring Bulgarian actors. The films deal with sexual exploitation.
The Cervantes Institute will show Paper Birds at the closure of the festival on May 15.

Subtitles in English and Bulgarian are available for some films. Entrance for all the films is free.
