Sofia to be divided into three paid parking zones

City-planning

altThe proposal for short-term paid parking in a ''yellow" zone in the capital may be waived, announced yesterday experts from the working group in charge of the new concept of organisation and control of parking in Sofia Municipality.

The project envisages the division of Sofia into three zones for paid parking –“blue”, “green” and “yellow”. They will cover the city centre, the outer centre and the periphery, respectively. According to the proposal, a two-hour stay for BGN 3 per hour will be allowed in the “blue” zone, a 3 hour stay for BGN 2 per hour in the “green” zone, and up to 3 hours for BGN 1 per hour in the “yellow” zone.
There are proposals for the scope of the “yellow” zone to be changed or even for a “yellow” zone not to be introduced at all but instead of this the option of establishing paid parking lots in front of large shopping centres and near major markets is being considered. If a “yellow” zone has to be introduced, it will happen in 2011 at the earliest. It is expected that the new “blue” and “green” areas, and the parking fees for these will come into effect this year.

"The residents of paid parking zones will pay an annual fee in order to avoid having to pay BGN 1, 2 or 3 per hour. The annual fee will be no more than BGN 10 per month or BGN 120 per year, and the price will be the same for all areas," explained Co-manager of the Sofia Urban Mobility Centre, Marchelo Dokovski.
