Sofia-Arsenal Museum of Contemporary Art opens on June 17 2011 with an exhibition of Norwegian art entitled Paradigm, displaying work several of that country's most outstanding artists in the fields of ceramics, glass and metals.

Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov and Norwegian ambassador Tove Skarstein will attend the opening, which also marks the museum`s first stage of completion. The first stage included finishing the exhibition area on the ground floor along with a thorough reconstruction of the building.

The second stage of the project will include finishing the two storeys above and developing a hall for temporary exhibitions and sculpture park.

The Sofia Arsenal Museum of Contemporary Art project will cost 1.25 million euro, with funding from the Norwegian government under the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area. The opening marks the completion of one of the largest Norwegian-financed projects in Bulgaria.

The museum would host many high-profile exhibitions and would establish itself as a major venue for cultural activities, Skarstein said.

The museum would be Sofia's first museum of contemporary art in line with all European capitals "and in compliance with the highest European standards," she said.
