Sofia Metro links east and west Sofia suburbs

City-planning

altThe newest section of the Sofia Metro network opened on September 7, linking the eastern Mladost suburbs with the western boroughs of Lyulin. The newly inaugurated section spans from Sveta Nedelia (St Sunday) square to the national football ground Vassil Levski.
With this latest addition to the metro, commuters can travel to and from Sofia's biggest boroughs in about 20 minutes, a journey which otherwise could take up to two hours in heavy traffic in peak hours.
On its first day of operation, all commuters boarding the metro at Sofia University station will travel for free.
The metro link was due to be officially inaugurated today by Bulgarian Prime Minister and former Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov.
In light of the tragic events that unfolded in Lake Ohrid in Macedonia, however, in which 15 Bulgarian tourists lost their lives, September 7 has been designated a day of national mourning, and the inauguration of the metro link will take place on September 8.
