Sofia Braces for Three Underground Parking Sites

City-planning
Sofia may get equipped with three underground parking lots, according to draft plans of the city's chief architect.

The construction of the parking sites, anticipated to ease the chronic problem of Sofia's heavy traffic, shall be granted on concession. Two of them are planned to be ready by the end of this year, Mayor Boyko Borissov said.

The three sites are seen to be situated under "Vitosha" shopping avenue, in the area of the National Palace of Culture, and under Alexander Batenberg Sq.

Their total capacity is projected at nearly 2000 parking places.

By far, Sofia municipality has stumbled over this problem due to the poor investment interest for parking construction. It has emerged to be unattractive because of the high prices of real estates in centre city and the slow profitability, experts explained.

The chief architecture unit is to convene June 5 and discuss the possible parking solutions for the two-million city.
