Seasonal clean-up of Sofia begins
The seasonal spring clean-up of Sofia has been launched by Sofia City Hall on April 4, an operation which will last until April 21, the Sofia municipality website said in a statement.
Residents of Sofia are urged to help in the process by cleaning the green belts around their homes or estates, as well as the adjacent parks and gardens.
A marquee has been set up at the entrance of Sofia's most iconic park, Borissova Gradina (The Boris Gardens) where people are invited to pick up a pair of gloves and a plastic bag and join the operation.
"This year, many volunteers will join in the initiative, including residents, businesses, municipal and state administrations. About 4000 volunteers, 60 businesses and other organisations will be included in the cleaning campaign of Sofia," mayor Yordanka Fandukova said in the media statement.
"Cleaning and maintenance of the areas around residential buildings is the responsibility of of the citizens," Fandukova said.
Starting April 9, the Sofia Municipality and the Bulgarian television channel bTV will launch the campaign "clean Sofia in one day".
