City-planning

altThe public tender to pick the company that will draft the detailed project for the Sofia metro third line would be announced in January 2010, the chief executive of Sofia city hall firm Metropoliten, Stoyan Bratoev, told Stroitelstvo Gradut weekly.

Sofia metro now has one working line and another is under construction. Financing needed for the third line is expected to be allocated from European Union structural funds for the 2014/20 budget cycle, he said.

The technical consultants picked in the upcoming tender would have to survey the designated route and prepare a detailed technical project.

The Sofia metro general plan of development envisages the construction of the third line to link the southwest of the city to northeast, servicing the boroughs of Knyazhevo in the foothills of Mount Vitosha through Sofia city centre and and then to Vassil Levski borough in the northeast. The line will 19km long and will have 23 stations.

The third line will link to the now operating first line at the Sofia University metro station and the second line at Vitosha Boulevard.

Its proposed capacity will be 16 000 passengers during peak hour, while the capacity of the first and second lines is substantially superior, ranging between 40 000 and 60 000 passengers during peak hours, Stroitelstvo Gradut said.
