City-planning

By the end of the year, the investments in the water supply and sewerage (WSS) network, granted under Operational Programme (OP) Environment, are expected to be about BGN 1 bn. Six projects, worth BGN 200 mln, out of the overall 32 drafted proposals have already been approved. They include an improvement of the water cycle in the towns of Vratsa, Gabrovo, Veliko Turnovo and the Rhodopes Municipality. The projects' implementation should begin this year and should be completed by the end of 2013, announced Malina Krumova, Head of OP Environment with the Ministry of Environment and Water (MEW), at the inauguration of the International Specialised Exhibition BULAQUA yesterday. The exhibition will continue until 15 April, involving over 500 companies from 25 countries. The Conference was organised by the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA) with the assistance of Bulgarreklama Agency, Wasser Berlin, the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, as well as in cooperation with the Association of the WSS Operators in Bulgaria.

By mid-year, MEW plans to launch WSS projects for towns and villages with a population of 2,000-10,000 inhabitants, which will also be financed under OP Environment. By the year's end, the opening of overall 8 wastewater treatment plants is expected, including those located in the towns of Stara Zagora and Haskovo. Besides, last year altogether 9 facilities were put into operation.

This is also the final deadline set for the drafting of projects for management for waters and water treatment facilities throughout the country. These documents will contain a detailed examination of the current state of the sector's infrastructure and measures on solving problems in perspective of 25 years, said Jordan Tatarski, Chief Secretary at the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW).
