No major obstruction to traffic after snow in Sofia

City-planning

There were delays to Sofia's public transport on December 13 2010 because of the light snow cover, and traffic is also heavy, but there are no serious obstructions, Bulgarian media reported.

The snow cover is insignificant, reaching only about 5cm, but steep streets in Sofia have been sanded to facilitate traffic, Dnevnik daily reported.

Bulgarian border police said that traffic through the Ilinden – Exohi border crossing point with Greece is possible only if the vehicles are kitted out with chains. This checkpoint has been processing traffic between Greece and Bulgaria for more than a week, since the E79 was damaged by flash-floods.

Motorists are also advised to be extremely cautious at the Zlatograd border crossing point also with Greece, as the road passes through a mountainous section, which is steep and swerving.

All mountain passes near Smolyan are also open for traffic, but chains are mandatory, the report said.

According to weather forecasts, December 13 will remain cloudy with light snow expected in most parts, although towards the evening, temperatures will drop further and snowfall will cease.
