New tax zones to be introduced in Sofia
”We will propose a new tax zoning of Sofia, prepared under clear criteria and after broad discussions,” said in an interview for BTA Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova. This measure will also change the local taxes and fees, which are calculated on the basis of tax assessments of properties.
The commission, which is preparing the proposal for the new tax zones, will finalize its work soon. The new zoning will cover the construction borders of the city. Natural dividers - rivers, railways, and main boulevards will determine the boundaries between the zones. “Taxes will decrease gradually from the centre to the periphery,” stated Fandakova.
The proposal envisages the creation of five zones in Sofia, which is the maximum number foreseen by law. ”For me, it is important the citizens to be convinced that the criteria are fair,” pointed out Fandakova. “Similarly to other cities, property prices increase in the areas around the new subway,” said the Mayor. Fandakova reassured property owners that only incurred costs, not future ones, would influence the investment criteria.
”The planned new tax areas will be subject to extensive public debates in order to avoid the mistake made last year, when the project remained unclear for citizens and had to be suspended,” reminded Fandakova.
