More tourists expected due to the upcoming ski championships

Tourism

"We are expecting around 7% more tourists this year during the European and World Cup Ski races," said for Klassa daily, Rumen Draganov, Director of the Institute for Analysis and Assessment of Tourism. This growth would be a result of the upcoming championships, which will be held during the last two weeks of February. At that time, in Bansko and Pamporovo mountain resorts, the Men's Giant Ski Slalom will take place as well as the Women's European Ski Championship. From December to April, in turn, several national winter competitions will be organised. Draganov commented that during the winter, Bulgaria will focus the attention of ski and snowboard fans from around the world and this will make the coming season very interesting. Statistics showed that last year's Ski World Cup event was transmitted by more than 200 broadcasters worldwide.

Currently, preliminary bookings are made at the accommodation rates announced as early as the previous winter season. In fact, their discounts reached up to 30%. At those prices, reservations until mid-September could be made since afterwards the active search for hotels begins. "So far, no bookings were made on the offers of the former season, but their price has not increased," explained Draganov.

The discounts on early bookings reached 10% - 15%, stated Irina Nikulchina, Chairwoman of the Bansko Tourism Association.

She commented that there was not yet a clear pricing policy for the upcoming winter season, since the summer one was still closing. According to Nikulchina, most bookings usually start at the end of the month. Until then, the negotiations held between tour operators and hoteliers will continue.

The price per person per night in the highest grade hotel varies between BGN 110 – 1,200. "These amounts are about 40% lower compared to the same-class hotels abroad at the ski resorts similar to Bulgarian ones," explained Draganov. There are 19 different prices depending on the time of booking, length of reservation, the included tourist services and others, added he. In the low-category hotels, the price comes to BGN 50 per night.
