Lyulin motorway on track to be completed in 2012

City-planning

altBulgaria could finish building Lyulin motorway near Sofia in 2012 if it keeps up the current pace, the European Commission said. Speaking at a meeting of the committee monitoring projects funded under the European Union's Ispa pre-accession aid programme, Karsten Rasmussen from the EC regional policy directorate-general, said that the motorway was an example of how a misfiring project could be turned around. All projects funded under Ispa have to be completed by December 31 2010 or Bulgaria forfeits the money, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU Funds Meglena Plougchieva said.
National Road Infrastructure Agency (NRIA) executive director Yanko Yankov was adamant the Lyulin project will make up for the delay and finish on time, according to a statement released by the agency. Construction work is expected to be accelerated over the next 14 months, NRIA said.
The first five km of the 19-kilometre Lyulin motorway, which was designed as part of European Union's Transport Corridor Four, should be unveiled on June 18, during the visit of European Commissioner for regional policy Danuta Huebner. In early May, Huebner announced that the EC would unfreeze 115 million euro for the project.
