The next rotating EU presidency, Lithuania, will propose the discussion of Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area despite opposition from some Member States.
This will happen in December at a meeting of the European Ministers of Interior, Darius Gaydis, charge d'affaires Embassy of Lithuania in Bulgaria, said for the Bulgarian National Radio.
“We will do everything possible to find a solution to the problem and make a decision that will lead to the accepting of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area,” Gaydis said.
“Lithuania as a country strongly supports the accession of Bulgaria. Our president confirmed that at the service of credential letters to the Bulgarian ambassador Vasiliy Takev 2 weeks ago,” Gaydis also said.
Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Zinaida Zlatanova said that the country will join Schengen after it restores the confidence of the Member States.
A group of countries led by the Netherlands refuses to accept Romania and Bulgaria to Schengen because they lack good results in the fight against corruption and organized crime.
