Kristalina Georgieva scoops European Voice annual awards
Kristalina Georgieva, European commissioner for international co-operation, humanitarian aid and crisis response, has won the European Voice awards for European of the year and European Commissioner of the year.
European Voice is a website dedicated to European Union topics.
Kristalina Georgieva received the accolades on November 30 2010, during the European Voice's annual awards ceremony.
According to the report, the readers of European Voice voted Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), as their EU official of the year. He had been nominated for preserving the ECB's reputation for independence in the face of political pressure during the eurozone's sovereign-debt crisis.
Joint winners of the national politician of the year award were David Cameron and Nick Clegg, the prime minister and deputy prime minister of the UK.
Dutch Jeanine Hennis-Plaaschaert was voted MEP of the Year, while – in a more humorous vein – the winner of the inspiration of the year was Spain's national football team thanks to their antics in South Africa's World Cup earlier this year.
Georgieva, a former World Bank official, has made a very positive impression in her native Bulgaria and in Europe since her appointment. Last month she declared her three priorities for her mandate: the creation of the EU’s disaster response capacity, the setting up of Evhac, and proceeding with the mid-term review of the European Union's humanitarian aid consensus’ action plan.
The strategy envisages that some of those theories and disaster response capabilities be put to the test in order to evaluate their effectiveness.
In mid November, Bulgarian media reported that whereas the Bulgarian Government was losing popularity on all fronts, Georgieva was the country's most popular public figure, with a 56 per cent approval rate, according to Gallup.
