General strike in Greece: Bulgarian media

Around the world

Greece was swept by a mass general strike Wednesday. Anarchists and the police clashed in front of the Greek Parliament after yet another package of austerity measures evoked protests from Athens to Crete and Rhodes. This was the most mass strike that Greeks remember, the BNR comments. Over 100,000 protested in Athens, 40,000 in Thessaloniki and another 1 million all over the country. Two days ago, the IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde stated that in view of the recession in Greece, the remaining euro area members will have to consider writing off part of the loans issued, the BNR reminds. In the past two years, Greece received a total of €240 billion. Earlier this year, the country’s debt was trimmed €100 billion. At the same time, journalist Ivan Filchev commented in an interview with BNT’s morning program that there was no crisis in Greece in the Bulgarian sense of the word and it was rather a loss of possessions and luxury. The media coverage, however, caused a slight distortion of the picture, as Greeks were still well-dressed and public houses - full, he noted.
