Fervex Medicine Recalled over Contamination Concerns
The manufacturer of the cold and flu medicine Fervex, Bristol-Myers Squibb, has ordered the recall of a batch of the medicine from pharmacies all over the world amid contamination fears.
The medicine was taken off the shelves after the discovery of a bacterial load in a batch of raspberry flavored Fervex granules, according to reports of Romanian daily "Romania Libera", as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).
Despite the fact that only one flavor of the flu remedy, Fervex Raspbery, is believed to be contaminated, the pharmaceutical company has ordered the withdrawal of all Fervex products for additional testing as a safety precaution.
The measures were taken after authorities in France detected the bacteria enterococcus faecalis, present in the human gut and human faeces and potentially harmful to health, in a batch of Fervex Raspberry.
The contaminated medicine may cause adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Bristol-Myers Squibb, as cited by Mediafax, informed that the evidence gathered so far indicated that the bacteria was present in the sucrose contained in the medicine, adding that it had ordered the recall of all products containing the same source of sugar.
The company vowed to investigate the matter and provide additional information as soon as it was available.
