European health cards to be issued again

Around the world

European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) will be issued again as of Monday, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) announced. This will happen at the new distribution stations where citizens will apply for and receive their EHICs.

These include 398 stations throughout the country, mainly in DSK Bank's branch network. Their full list can be found on the website of the NHIF, as well as in each Regional Health Insurance Fund.

The previous successful bidder's stations will not accept applications any more. The card itself and the services for its issuance are free of charge. It should be issued within 15 calendar days. Applications for issuance can be received free of charge at the stations or these can be printed out from NHIF's website. Applications should be submitted in person or by an authorised person. In both cases, the applicant's ID card must be also presented.

For children under 14 years of age and those under 16 years of age, who do not have ID cards, a birth certificate and an identity card of one of their parents must be presented.

The European Health Insurance Card is a document on the basis of which insured people can use emergency health (medical and dental) care while staying in another EU Member State - according to country of stay's legislation. Temporary difficulties regarding issuing of EHICs were due to an appeal of the procedure for selecting a contractor.
