EC: Beginning of a Democratic Process Is Set

ABOUT BULGARIA

The events in Bulgaria are the beginning of a democratic process, the spokesperson of the EC, Pia Hansen, commented. She stated it was the turn of the National Assembly to define the next steps.

"For the EPP, Boyko Borissov remains the most suitable PM for Bulgaria and he can rely on our support in the future," the deputy chair of the EPP group in the EP, Manfred Weber stated.

Mr Weber stated that from 2009 on, Boyko Borissov and his cabinet made a series of very important reforms and managed to keep the financial stability of the country in times of hard financial and economic crisis.

Manfred Weber was the only one to comment on Mr Borissov's resignation while the two most significant figures in the EPP - Wilfried Martens and Joseph Daul kept silent.

The first political reaction to the events in Bulgaria from Europe came from the liberals.

"Recently, out concerns about freedom and supremacy of law grew during the term of office of Mr Borissov, Graham Watson, president of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party stated, placing Mr Borissov in Group B along with Silvio Berlusconi and Trayan Basescu and expressed his hope that they will not be in the power after the elections this year.

The world media also focused their attention on the resignation of Boiko Borissov with the comments that "the street ousted the government". They also reminded of the clashes between protesters and the police and the large-scale rallies against the high prices of electricity in Bulgaria.
