Construction resumes on Sofia sports hall

City-planning

altBulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and Sports Minister Svilen Neikov turned the first sod on the construction of the new multi-purpose sports hall in Sofia, Dnevnik daily reported on January 18 2010.

Construction first started in 2009, but had to be halted over irregularities, such as the lack of a project overseer, website mediapool.bg reported. Those issues have been solved, while the construction price tag has also been cut from 107.6 million leva to 90 million leva.

The funds are part of the Government's anti-crisis plan designed to combat the economic slowdown, Borissov was quoted as saying by Dnevnik.

"Sofia is a two million city, without a modern sports facility. I have done my part – I managed to barter for the hall to be constructed for 17 million leva less than its original price," he said. "My next task is to deliver the hall. We will have a superb new facility."

The facility, with 12 000 capacity and 43 000 sq m built-up area is poised to be completed by August 1 2011. The site, a total of 63 240 sq m next to Tsarigradsko Chaussee Boulevard. The plot is owned by the Defence Ministry.
Bulgarian media reported in July 2009 that construction company Glavbolgarstroi and the consortium Strabag Sports Hall were the only two bidders for the sports facility.

Glavbolgarstroi's bid of 107.6 million leva, VAT excluded, won ahead of Strabag, which offered to build the hall for 111.7 million leva.

The facility itself will have to accommodate basketball, volleyball, handball and gymnastics events, as well as conferences, concerts and other social events. The hall must allow future expansion and meet European Union standards to host domestic and international sporting events.
