altFeasibility studies on the construction of a Sofia solar power plant to be initiated
A total of 8 small Hydro Power Plants (HPP) will be built in Sofia, announced at a press conference yesterday Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality Irina Savina. The design of the HPP system will start in 2010 and their construction will begin in 2011. The construction of the eight plants will cost BGN 15 m. According to the Deputy Mayor, a preliminary assessment of the plants is being carried out at present and the most favourable option for financing the project is being sought.
"Sofia is unique in terms of the fact that water in the water supply system comes down from a high altitude and is, therefore, under very high pressure. The planned hydropower system will solve this problem and the energy will be used for the generation of electricity," explained Professor Nikola Kaloyanov, Vice-Rector of the Technical University of Sofia and member of the team working on the Programme for Use of Renewable Energy Sources of the capital. According to him, the HPP system will produce 50,000 kWh of electricity annually. The plants will be built in the residential districts of Bistrica, Boyana, Moderno Predgradie, Simeonovo. Experts estimates show that a period of 8 to 10 years will be sufficient to return the original investment. The system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 102,5 thousand tonnes.
The municipality is also exploring the possibility of constructing a Photovoltaic Power Plant with a capacity of 1 MW. Currently, consultations are taking place with the mayors of the 24 regions of the capital for the selection of a suitable terrain. It is expected that the plant will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3,100 tonnes
