Bulgarians Among the Most Literate Nations

altFor the first time the World Bank gave free access to its statistical data for 209 countries, Bulgaria among them. The statistics include information on finance, healthcare, life expectancy, economy, education, environment and many other aspects of human life. The contemporary status of human development has been assessed on the basis of over 900 indices.
The Bulgarians are among the most educated nations in the world - 98,3% of the population is literate. The average life expectancy is 73 years, compared to 69 years average world life expectancy.
It has been mentioned repeatedly that Bulgaria is one of the poorest EU member states. The data of the World Bank confirms this statement. The average yearly income in Bulgaria for 2008 was $5,490 per capita.
With respect to expenditures for healthcare Bulgaria differs drastically from the other EU states. In 2008 Bulgaria spent $ 384 per capita on healthcare. The Marshall Islands, Namibia and Romania have similar statistics.
Regarding the number of Internet users Bulgaria also lags behind many countries. Only 35% of the Bulgarians use the Internet. The same numbers of users have Kuwait, Bosnia and Turkey. Regarding this index Iceland takes the top position with 90% of the population relying on the services of the world net.
