Around the world

A team of Bulgarian firefighters commissioned to fight Russian forest fires have been operating over a 20km stretch near the town of Likino-Dulevo, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said in a media statement on August 9 2010.

The Bulgarian firefighters were reported to be seriously engaged over the weekend near the towns of Likino-Dulevo and Noginsk.

On August 8, the Bulgarian team managed to extinguish a fire that came within two km of the town and threatened to destroy the nearby village of Yazvishte.

Meanwhile, about 35 people have requested evacuation from Moscow. Most are families of the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in the capital, the spokesperson of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, Vessela Tcherneva, said, cited by Dnevnik daily.

A total of 16 people were evacuated on August 8. The others will return to Bulgaria over the next three days, the report said.

The Bulgarian embassy is the fourth EU embassy in Moscow to evacuate staff and family members.
