Bulgarian Parliament Donates Money to Charity Show

Finance and Taxes

The Bulgarian parliament will donate to a charity TV show the sum of the collected value-added tax (VAT) on text messages that viewers had sent to support the good cause.

The decision for donating the sum, which amounts to BGN 159,553, was taken hours after Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov and the Finance Minister Simeon Djankov appeared on the final episode of "The Magnifiscent Six" (Velikolepnata Shestorka) on the Bulgarian private bTV.

Borisov has explained that the collected VAT on the text messages that viewers had sent could not be returned and he added that it could be donated to the show's campaign.

The text message price was BGN 1,20 VAT included, and BGN 1 went to the good cause, which was the closing of an orphanage for children below three years of age in the city of Shumen.

After the parliamentary donation, the show collected BGN 1,190,199, the organizers from bTV have announced. The sum is enough for the planned creation of a special center for supporting parents with little children.

The Finance Ministry has announced that a similar request has been received from another charity show on the Bulgarian private Nova TV, "Bailando." However, the cabinet has not decided yet whether to apply the same approach for the show and for other charity campaigns in Bulgaria.

The Finance Ministry has also announced that the cabinet will take into consideration a possible legislative settlement of the collected VAT from charity shows and campaigns next year.
