Bulgarian IT industry conquers world markets despite the economic crisis

Interesting

The creation of software products is one of the main engines for the world economy. The rapid progress of information technology has long become part of modern life and this is small surprise. Over the past decades, thousands of software professionals were trained in our country, becoming equal partners of their colleagues in the world’s most developed countries. Even during the global economic crisis, the Bulgarian software industry continues to increase its efficiency. Such data can be seen in the survey entitled "Barometer of the IT industry". It is held for the third year here and is commissioned by the Bulgarian Association of Software Companies BASCOM. The survey provides statistics on the development of the Bulgarian software business in 2010 and expectations for 2011. It encompasses 38 companies that are members of BASCOM and of the Bulgarian Web Association. Data shows that the average sales of software companies that amounted to 4.5 million BGN in 2008 have increased despite the crisis to about 5 million in 2010. More from Georgi Zahariev, member of the Managing Board of BASCOM:

"This is a growth of some 8% for the past three years. Given the very bad economic situation in 2009 and 2010, we consider these results as a great success. The situation is similar with \ profits. They average about 10% of the sales in the industry. This is a very healthy profit margin. The export data shows that the Bulgarian software industry has the same sales abroad as in Bulgaria. This is also good news because it shows that our industry is already mature and well balanced. It does not depend on a particular market or a specific niche. It also, there are no surprises. Nearly two-thirds of exports are to Europe, one third is to North America, mainly the U.S. Exports are generally stable. The rest of the world such as Africa, South America, etc., are almost negligible as a market for our software industry. "

The number of employees in the software sector also shows an increase. From about 6,000 employees in 2007, their number has risen to nearly 8,000 in 2009. The data shows that the average monthly salaries in the industry are also growing. The overall increase for the last two years is over 8 per cent. Last year, the average salary in the Bulgarian IT sector is between two and three thousand leva. The survey “Barometer of the Bulgarian IT industry" suggests that next year the wages of professionals from the sector will become even higher. A very serious problem in the sector is that it is very difficult to find good specialists, BASCOM officials say. In their opinion, the whole education system needs a radical change. Many of the companies surveyed said that if they could find the right specialists, their business would increase by 50 percent.
