Bulgaria to seek to double EU funding for eco projects in 2014-2020

Finance and Taxes

Bulgaria is set to double the volume of EU funding for environmental projects in the next programme period 2014-2020, Deputy Environmen Minister Ivelina Vassileva said on December 5 2011.

In particular, Bulgaria hopes to get 2.4 billion in European money against 1.2 billion euro obtained during the first seven years of its EU membership. The sum includes only financing that should come directly from the funds without national co-funding.

Bulgaria will insist on doubling the size of funding particularly on bio-diversity preservation projects for which the country has been allocated 108 million euro in the current programme period.

Between 2007 and 2014, Bulgaria will channel 70 per cent of the funds allocated under the Environment operational programme into water projects, including treatment plants and sewerage systems. The country will also fund construction of landfills.
