Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff greeted the Brazil - Bulgaria - Sustainable Partnership business conference by saying that her official visit is a good occasion for the resumption of economic cooperation between the two countries.

“I hope that bi-lateral trade turnover will reach about $1 bn next year, compared to the meagre $133 million at present,” said Bulgaria’s Head of State Georgi Parvanov. “We must cooperate in the field of nuclear energy and renewable energy sources, and seek opportunities for joint production in the food industry and agriculture,” he pointed out.

“Bulgaria can be a bridge for Brazilian investment in Europe and Asia,” said Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov. “Your country is of interest to Brazil due to its economic stability, low labour costs and tax rates,” said Fernando Pimentel, Brazil's Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. Technological development and innovation is a priority for Brazil. Bulgarian and Brazilian business relations will resume in a few specific areas. According to Minister Traikov, the most realistic possibility is for Bulgarian companies to buy Brazilian aircraft and for the South American country to build a regional centre for the repair of its machines in our country. “Bulgaria may very well import ethanol from Brazil which is much cheaper than the American product,” added Traikov. “Production of ethanol in Brazil will increase by 200% and is projected to reach 1.5 million tons,” said Maria da Graça Foster, Petrobras Director of Gas and Energy.

“We can also cooperate with Brazil in the hydropower sector,” said Traikov. He gave the example of the Brazilian Itaipu HPP, which produced 11,000 kWh of energy, as much as the quantities generated by six plants of the Belene NPP type.

At the Bulgarian-Brazilian business forum, Traikov said that we can export to Brazil essential oils, chemical products, red wines and cognac. He reminded Brazilian companies that Bulgarian wine is the first wine ever mentioned in a literary source - the Iliad of Homer. The Minister wishes for the two countries to cooperate more closely in the tourism sector because, until now, out of 6 million foreign tourists in Bulgaria, merely 3,000 were Brazilian. Bulgarians who have visited the Latin American Country number 3,000 as well.
