Bulgaria’s winter resorts ‘almost full’

Tourism

There is very little room at the inn as vacancies at ski resorts in Bulgaria are running out fast, according to a report by Bulgarian National Television on December 22 2011.

In spite of hard-up financial times, many Bulgarians were heading to mountain winter resorts for Christmas and New Year, the report said.

However, last-minute bookings could still be possible.

Hoteliers already had sold out most of their holiday packages.

The report said that some of the places offering more affordable winter breakaways were Dobrinishte, Bansko, Chepelare, Belmeken, Samokov and Malyovitsa.

Donka Sokolova, chairperson of the Bulgarian association of travel agents BATA, said that a trend that had been seen in the past two to three years was that domestic tourists were seeking winter destinations that were quieter and more off the beaten track – meaning places that were other than the best-known and most crowded resorts.

Prices in ski resorts this year were similar to those in 2010, and in some cases, slightly lower.

A ski holiday package in Bansko was about 120 euro for three days, in Pamporovo about 92 euro, while Borovets was the most expensive at 135 euro, the report said. Ski passes cost 35 to 50 euro.

Because of the economic crisis, foreign tourist numbers were down.

Sokolova said that the largest decrease was in tourists from the UK. Many Serbians, Greeks, Macedonians and Russians had chosen to spend the winter holidays at home.

Bulgaria’s total revenue from foreign tourists this winter was expected to be about 300 million euro.
