Bulgaria’s exports to third countries grew by 12.8% last year

Bulgaria’s exports to third countries increased by 12.8% throughout 2012, compared to the previous year, showed preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI). The volume of exported goods reached BGN 16.9 bn, our main trading partners being Turkey, China, Russia, Serbia, Macedonia and the United States, accounting for 50% of Bulgaria’s exports to third countries.

Bulgaria’s exports to third countries (outside the EU) in December 2012 rose by 6.8%, according to NSI. Meanwhile, imports from third countries into Bulgaria grew at the same rate on a monthly basis. In absolute terms, imports increased by BGN 1.6 bn and exports – by BGN 1.3 bn on an annual basis.

At the same time, imports from third countries increased by 10.8%, compared to 2011 and stood at BGN 20.6 bn. The largest amount of goods came from Russia, Turkey, China and the Ukraine. Imports of fats, oils and waxes of animal or vegetable origin registered the highest increase (57.6%), while imports of foods and live animals reported the biggest decline (23.5%).

In 2012, Bulgaria’s total exports grew by 2.6% to BGN 40.7 bn, compared to 2011. Imports rose by 8.8% to BGN 49.8 bn. Summarised data on Bulgaria’s turnover with the European Union and third countries showed a negative foreign trade balance amounting to minus BGN 9.145 bn and a foreign trade deficit of BGN 825.7 mln for December alone.
