Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has welcomed the imminent arrival of a gigantic tunnel-boring machine for the development the next stage of Sofia’s Metro system.

"A machine as big as a Boeing, will arrive in Sofia for digging through the central part of town for the Sofia Metro," he announced on Wednesday.

"After what we saw in the factory in Schwanau in Germany I do not doubt that in 2012 the Sofia metro will run from the Central Station and Nadezhda to Cherni Vrah Boulevard," stated the Prime Minister on taking symbolic delivery of the machine.

The tunneling machine weighs some 1 600 tons, and is 85 meters long. It will be transported from Germany to Belene, Bulgaria, via the Danube. From there, it will be moved to Sofia by road, at an estimated cost of EUR 1 M.

The monster digger has been specifically designed for the conditions of the Metro in Sofia. Each day, the machine will dig about 9 meters and will remove approximately 1 000 cubic meters, or 50 truck-loads.

It will work on a continuous 24-hour rota of three shifts, seven days a week, staring in April 2010, with completion of the next section of the Metro scheduled for one year later.
