Culture

There are over 100 archaeological sites on the 540 km route of the Bulgarian section of the South Stream gas pipeline, Director of the Bulgarian National Institute of Archaeology informed. The exploration of these remains will cost over BGN 10 million.
The two most important findings were a Roman fortress and early Byzantine era in the town of Avren, along two Roman villas and farmhouses.
The archeological sites were presented to South Stream investors Russian Gazprom and the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) who issued a written statement confirming that they would keep their obligations, without specifying a deadline.
The archeologists have not started working on the sites and say that they are concerned that they will not have enough time before the construction and that these unique sites may get damaged.
