BAS exhibition in Sofia opens doors at Parliament building

Interesting

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) launched a new exhibition in the Parliament building on September 16 2010, entitled BAS and Technology, Bulgarian media reported.

Among the many items on display, according to the report, are the latest devices and equipment developed by BAS in technology, defence and medicine among others.

For example, visitors will be introduced to the Bulgarian contribution to the large hadron collider in CERN, the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, a facility which lies in a tunnel 27km in circumference, as much as 175m beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.

Among the 6500 scientists forming the international team that designed and constructed the LHC, about 100 were from the Bulgarian Academy of Science and Sofia University. The Bulgarians worked on some of the most important parts of the accelerator - its detectors. The Bulgarian contribution to the project is associated with one of the most crucial in the search for the Higgs boson "God particle", the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid). And at a diameter of 15m and length of 21m, it's big.

Additionally, the BAS exposition will show the latest developments in weapons and defence systems, alarm systems, newly-developed cancer treatment devices, super sensitive measuring devices, all of them innovations developed by young BAS scientists, the report said. The event will last until September 24.
