Culture

The Sofia-based National Palace of Culture has opened the 30th edition of Sofia International Book Fair. Organizers from the Bulgarian Book Association announced more than 130 Bulgarian and foreign publishers are taking part in the forum. The book fair is presenting the literature and culture of France, the USA, Norway, China, Spain, Germany as well as the editions and activities of TRADUKI , the European network for literature and books. The latter includes Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Austria, Romania, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia. This year’s guest of honour is France. That is why the French Institute in Sofia has prepared a series of culture events. Young female writer Antonia Kerr is going to present her book Flowers For Zoe, which has become truly sensational in France in the last year. French philosopher Milad Doueihi and sociologist Michel Maffesoli are holding lectures and workshops.

Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands has arrived in Sofia especially for the opening event. She is engaged in campaigns that encourage reading among children. Princess Laurentien is the chair of the Dutch Reading and Writing Foundation and a founder of Missing Chapter Foundation. In 2009, she was elected UNESCO Special Envoy on Literacy for Development. She is going to present her first children’s book entitled Mr Finney And The World Upside Down, which has been translated into Bulgarian.

Renowned Bulgarian writers and literary critics such as Lyubomir Levchev, Lea Koen and Milena Tsvetkova will be discussing whether the end of books is coming. The lovers of books could meet Bulgarian contemporary writers Georgi Gospodinov, Milen Rouskov and Kalin Terziyski, who won the 2011 EU Prize for Literature.

The forum is also running a seminar dedicated to Scandinavian literature in Bulgaria. It will look at contemporary Scandinavian literature and the funding for translations to Bulgarian.
The forum envisages the premier of two books by Yugoslav writer Ivo Andric that contain unpublished so far works in Bulgarian.
The Cervantes Institute is presenting new technologies in Spanish language teaching.

Visitors to the fair will be able to have a closer look at Barack Obama’s book Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters and see a demonstration of Jim Pipe’s The Book Of Spells, a 3D virtual pop-up book.
