Kostinbrod is a town in Sofia region. It is administrative center of Kostinbrod municipality.


Location

Kostinbrod is situated in the northwest part of the Sofia valley or Sofiisko pole. It is located 17 km west of the capital city of Sofia, 15 km of Novi Iskar and 20 km of Bankya. It is surrounded by the mighty slopes of Stara planina mountain in the north, in the south of it are Lyulin and Vitosha mountains, in the west it goes to the limestone heights of Slivnitsa and Dragoman. There are many hot mineral water springs that make preferable destination for relaxation and rehabilitation. 

History

It is no surprise that people have settled in the Sofia valley from the prehistoric times which could be seen from the numerous ancient tombs, cemeteries and artifacts in the surroundings of Sofia and in the territory of Kostinbrod municipality. It is interesting to visit the rich finding in the Gradishte area which is on the territory of the experimental strawberry plantation. There it is found a stop on important road from Romanian time Nish - Tsarigrad.

Central landmark in the area is the object "Kasnorimska residentsia" which is large monumental complex constructed and designed as such and from architectural point of view it is peristyle building. During the excavations were found foundations with rich colorful mosaic in warm shades, pottery, coins, memorial stones.
The landmark is being renovated and researched. 

Economy

The economy of Kostinbrod was largely based on poultry farming and stock breeding in the past. In proximity are located Institute for poultry farming, poultry factory and Institute for stock breeding. Before here worked the largest Institute for strawberry plantation on the Balcan peninsula. In the 1990's many of these enterprises stopped working. 

The locals are mostly occupied in stock breeding. The main crops that are planted in the area are wheat, barley, peas, corn, sunflower, potatoes and different vegetables. 

 

Infrastructure

In Kostinbrod there are two primary schools, vocational school for veterinary medicine and agronomy, high school, three community centers, theater, private kindergarten and three kindergartens. 
The town is with good infrastructure. 

 

Transportation

There are regular buses, trains and road taxis to Sofia, Slivnitsa, Dragoman and other settlements.
