EC warns that Bulgaria needs to clear its landfill sites

ABOUT BULGARIA

The European Commission demanded that Bulgaria take care that landfill sites in the country meet EU legislation requirements. The request concerns several Member States. According to EU laws, waste should be landfilled only as a last resort and this may only be done provided that the negative effects on human health and the environment are prevented. Bulgaria agreed to close landfill sites which do not meet the requirements of EU legislation. Although there is some progress, 124 landfills are still in violation of the law. Therefore, the Commission sent a reasoned opinion (the second stage in the proceedings for failure to fulfil obligations), giving Bulgaria two months to reply. If no satisfactory response is received, a suit against Bulgaria may be brought to the European Court of Justice, the press service of the European Commission announced.
